Multiple Blessings

When the story broke that a mum in the US had successfully given birth to Octuplets, there was a heated debate with some people terming it a blessing and others saying that more is not always better.

Those against claimed that people call it a blessing just because they’re following the rules of life which dictate that we rejoice and celebrate new life. It’s just this much more difficult to talk of new life in a negative light but the human mother is neither physically nor psychologically designed to give birth to and bring up 8 children at a go.

Extreme multiple births, which have become more common with the use of fertility drugs are often characterized by high mortality rates. Though not new, they’re still quite a phenomenon. There was a time triplets were a marvel, and still are to some extent. But more likely to make news are quadruplets, quintuplets, sextuplets, septuplets, octuplets, nonuplets, decaplets, undecaplets, duodecaplets, quindecaplets etc. Thankfully all the later are very rare.

There are many documented cases of fertility drug use resulting in multiple births. According to About.com, in 1996 a 23 year old mother had undecaplets (11). She elected to undergo selective reduction and reduce to 4. In those mundane words lies the chilling idea of authorizing the doctors to mercifully end the lives of the other 7. In 1971, in Italy, a mother had 15 fetuses removed form her womb after 4 months of pregnancy. In December, 1998, the Chukwu octuplets were born in US. They too were conceived with the use of fertility drugs. There are many more examples on that site.

The debate rages on. Is more always better?

Tell me today I am number one!!

Who said more is better? One child is so hard to take care of (what with all the crying, diaper changes, feeding, hospitals!) aiii how does one manage with twins leave alone octuplets.

Imagine if the mother had planned to have only one or two children in her life then she ends up with 8?! I believe she doesn't see it as a blessing. 8?!! Tena in these hard economic times what does one do with eight kids?

it is always a wonder but i think for the parents it would be fun

Although it may not be so much fun, its an adventure for the parents. But i won't like to be the parents.

Mama I was just wondering if these kids are born in Kenya. There'll be a public outpouring of gifts and then after a few months you're on your own. And most likely the mother can forget about working. Housegirls will not touch you with a 10 meter pole.

Joy/Ka-investor just imagine the morning routine in that house. 8 babies wake up crying, 8 morning baths, 8 diaper changes, 8 cups of formula, and the list is endless. And then 8 kids to prepare for school....

It depends on what it is you are talking about. More money is better, more problems is not. More kids, nope. Definitely not better.

One child is hard enough to bring up. Lets assume you can hire nannies and can afford to feed them, but can you imagine having 8 teenagers, same age, same issues? No, not a blessing at all.

And successful birth is checking into hospital at 23 weeks of pregnancy, giving birth to severely premature babies weighing as little as 820g? Via C-Section? God cannot give you what you cannot handle and cannot give you 8 kids at once. He knows what a birth canal is for and he knows you have 2 boobs. Humans are playing around with nature. No. More is not always better.

If you want one kid stop OVER WORKING lest the single egg mutates. This madness of going evangelist about protecting life wil always continue to keep religious zealots relevant. Kids are often the welcomedby-products of indulgence for other reasons.

The more kids at one go the lower the quality of their lives. Mongoloids come in different shapes and shades. Welcome to the artifial world of anything goes. Ole wetu.

circumstances in this era does not favor having many children...otherwise the fewer you have the more time you need to dedicate to them, but something needs to be done about this fertility pills they cause not only multiple births but sometimes serious defects!

Oh my goodness me.....seriously how is she planning to breastfeed all those babies??? Owiiiee!

Gold help her family...now as for the Nigerian family..si teenage-hood is around the corner? Cue in the drama!!

I always say that I can never really know until I am in that particular situation; but that is plenty of work
Think:
The number of diapers they will change before these kids can go party on their own.
Think of the shopping cart
Think of their nagging moment--8kids crying at the same time.

I believe they will be more joyous once the kids grow up--not when they need everything to be done for them.

400 nappies a week... staggering number!
The octuplets' mother says she wants to breastfeed her babies... she must have iron tits.

Screamer more money is definitely better.

Venus welcome around. There are some things that can only be provided by the mum. Even if she afforded a nanny for each of the kids she’s still the mum and has a lot to do.

Sheikh its unfortunate the experiments science has turned to doing with human lives. I agree a successful birth should be giving birth to a full term baby weighing a safe weight so that he/she has a chance to develop properly.

Eunuch kwani multiple births are as a result of overworking jamani? Judging from the amount of sex around si population would have hit the roof by now? I’m also concerned about the quality of these kids genes and their lives and health thereafter. Wish them the best.

Nairobian here’s what some doctors have to say: Premature babies are at risk for lung, stroke and intestinal problems, said Dr. Elisabeth Ginsburg, medical director of the in vitro fertilization program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and president of the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology. Even if the babies survive the delivery, they may die later — as was the case with first U.S. set of live born octuplets. One died a week after they were born in Houston in 1998. And surviving children can end up with serious disabilities. Of the seven babies born in 1997 to Kenny and Bobbi McCaughey in Iowa, two ended up with cerebral palsy.

Val she said she’s breast feed them all but I doubt. How? Like Sheikh said, there’s a reason why women have 2 boobs.

Empower Kenya karibu. Let’s hope the kids grow up in good health. Otherwise dealing with serious medical conditions can dampen the joy.

Rafiki iron tits! The thought Lol.

By the way....
"A Californian woman who gave birth to octuplets earlier this week already has six children, US media has reported.
The eight babies were delivered nine weeks early by Caesarean section in a hospital near Los Angeles on Monday.
The mother has not been named, but US media is quoting family members as saying she already has six other children, including twins."http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7860041.stm

Thanks Shiko,

We do not get many cases of triplets leave alone octuplets here in Kenya...guess people have not ventured too much into the fertility drugs.

yes, i just had the recent news the other day.they were discussing this issue. the woman is in her 30 if not 30 to be exact. and she lives with her mum and dad. can u beleive it? and the grandmother to the babies said that her her daughter had the babies thru in vitro? i mean which kind of doctor was this? implanting 8 of them in her. so the debate they had was why did she do it? or rather even why did she choose to go ahead with the pregnancies. it's not right, even to the kids themselves.

Shiko-Msa said...

Neema the grandma to the kids says that the woman in obsessed with Kids. There's such a disorder you know. And we thought Angelina Jolie is the one obsessed with kids!

At last, a word from mama "octuplets"...

"Octuplets mum wanted huge family

A Californian single mother of six who recently gave birth to octuplets has spoken for the first time about her desire to have a "huge" family.
In excerpts from a TV interview yet to be broadcast, Nadya Suleman said she wanted to make up for the loneliness she felt growing up as an only child"http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7873890.stm

BP so we should not be surprised if she went back to the drawing board again for a few more? You never know.
